The £2m expansion of Cliffdale Primary Academy in Portsmouth has moved another step closer.
Following the demolition of an unused swimming pool building, Vale Southern Construction has completed the construction of two single-storey extensions. The team is now delivering the interior fit out with the plastering and screed floorings close to completion and the installation of mechanical and electrical fittings underway.
Portsmouth City Council appointed Vale Southern for the expansion following a competitive tender. The newly extended space will provide three extra classrooms for the school which accommodates 196 pupils aged 2-11 years who have complex learning difficulties.
“Although heavy rain in the project’s early stages added to the challenges, our programme is on track with the extensions now in their final stages,” said Sean Kirk, Vale Southern’s Senior Site Manager.
“We’re working in a constrained location in a live school environment, so have sought to minimise disruption throughout the works. Before starting on site, we created a temporary road providing safe access into the school via a nearby NHS car park and have implemented a robust communications plan to keep everyone informed.”
The project is on track to hand over before the end of August 2024 ensuring final checks and commissioning can be carried out ahead of the new school term in September.
Following the hand over, Vale Southern will also be responsible for delivering a new play and nature area for the children. The space will feature artificial grass hills, resin bound rubber flooring and new landscaping, including tree planting and vegetation.
