Vale Southern Construction converted a former care home into a luxury family residence with a stunning internal and external refurbishment.

The Brief

Located in a conservation area, this prominent character property is situated next to the grounds of Guildford Castle. Formerly used as a care home, the new owners wanted to convert the property into an exceptional family residence.

Spanning four floors and more than 5,000 sq ft of accommodation, the property offered significant scope for refurbishment, internally and externally.

From the ground up

Architects Mitchell Evans appointed Vale Southern for the project.

In the basement, a tanking system was installed and the area converted into an impressive new space that houses a gym, office, wine cellar, toilet and storage rooms.

On the ground floor, Vale Southern extended the living area, constructing an orangery on the back of the building. This was complemented by the installation of a Roundhouse kitchen with bespoke handmade cabinetry as well as new hardwood flooring throughout.

Adding to the ground floor upgrades, Vale Southern redecorated and installed Crittall style doors and cornices, including fibrous plaster mouldings.

On the first floor, every bedroom and ensuite was stripped out and refurbished to the highest standard with Elena Interiors leading the design. Cornices and fibrous plaster mouldings also feature throughout this level.

Combining elegance and tradition, the master ensuite incorporates tongue and groove panelling with fun and timeless Cole & Son vermicelli wallpaper in emerald green. Classic fixtures in polished nickel, and recycled glass tiles from Fired Earth, are complemented by furniture and accessories from Neptune.

The family bathroom has a darker and more contemporary feel with deep red-brown walls marble tiles in a herringbone pattern, brushed gold fittings from Lusso Stone and wall lights from Soho Home.

A new staircase was fitted stretching from ground level up to the second floor, which was formerly an unused loft. Vale Southern converted this area it into an habitable space which subject to planning, will also include a new roof patio.

The property also benefits from new mechanical and electrical services, including new wiring and energy efficient boilers.

Seamless execution

Jon James, Operations Manager for Vale Southern, said: “The property’s constrained location on the corner of a residential road presented some logistical challenges which we overcame to deliver the project within 11 months. The entire property has been reconfigured and refurbished with the highest quality fixtures and fittings creating a stunning family residence.

“The project’s success has led to our team being awarded a similar-sized refurbishment project which will transform a large residential property in Southwest London.”
