In the spotlight this month is our Contracts Manager, Jon James, who gives an insight into his construction experience, skills and role at Vale Southern.
How long have you worked in construction?
I’ve been working in construction for 38 years. I started my career working for a carpentry company and went on from there.
What’s been your most memorable project at Vale?
A family residence called Dreamcatcher on the Isle of Wight. This was a large, bespoke home project with high quality finishes throughout. The design is completely unique featuring a timber frame structure, six bedrooms, a swimming pool, separate annex, integral garage and extensive landscaping, including a croquet lawn and pond.
What are your main responsibilities at Vale Southern?
I look after a diverse range of projects, leading our team and liaising with clients to create strong working relationships. I also manage subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring our projects are completed on time, safely and within budget.
What key skills do you need to be a successful contracts manager?
As this is a role that involves working with a variety of people, good communication skills are essential. Managing different
needs and expectations also requires plenty of patience. Overseeing a project from start to finish is really rewarding, although not without its challenges, so a positive attitude is another quality that will stand you in good stead as a contracts manager.
What would you say sets Vale Southern apart from its competitors?
We’re a small team and that means we’re all closely involved in projects and always available to respond to our clients’ requests, whether that’s an issue that needs addressing or changes to the brief. Our clients can trust us to react quickly and effectively.
What do you like doing when you’re not at work?
When I’m not on site, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my grandchildren, and taking time out to explore the countryside.
