Working on behalf of Portsmouth City Council, Vale Southern has completed the £2m expansion of Cliffdale Primary Academy, a school catering for pupils with complex learning difficulties.
Following the demolition of an unused swimming pool building, the contractor has constructed two single-storey extensions, adding three extra classrooms to the site. The project, which included the fit out of the new buildings, also saw Vale Southern refurbish the existing music room and reconfigure the space to create a breakout area.
Externally, the school benefits from several upgrades providing an enhanced environment for the children. The MUGA has been resurfaced by Vale Southern and a new nature area created. This creative space features artificial grass hills, resin-bound rubber flooring and landscaping, including the planting of new trees and flowers.
Located in a constrained site, in the heart of a residential area and next to a family centre, the logistically challenging project required stringent communication and site management. A temporary access road was created into the school via a nearby NHS car park and Vale Southern carried out letter drops to keep neighbours informed of the works.
Oliver West, Managing Director of Vale Southern, said: “This project adds to our extensive education portfolio and enables pupils to benefit from enhanced facilities inside and out."
